1 2 3 86 Chapter Five | The Selements In Iyar 5764 (May 2004), four more families were admied thus increasing the total number of families to 16. At that me, there was not a single vacant building, aer 18 trailers were placed there, one used as a synagogue, and one as a club and secretariat.5 On the Passover holiday of 5765 (end of April 2005) the residents began to renovate their homes. This was iniated by Shilo Kinnere, a resident of the place, a young bachelor who had just finished his service in the ultra-Orthodox Nahal Force. The evacuaon plan was a catalyst for increasing the number of families, but the problem was that the IDF prevented the entry of more trailers, and only the crumbling houses remained. This is how the refurbishment idea was born. Some were refurbished by the selers, and some by the selement associaon. Two families lived in each house. A local resident, Itamar Levy, was responsible for the works.6 In Av of 5765 (August 2005), 16 families lived in Shirat HaYam.7 At noon on Thursday, the 13th of Av (08/18/2005), the residents of Shirat Hayam were forcibly evacuated from their homes. It was a highly publicized evacuaon because of the crowds that came to Shirat HaYam in the weeks prior to the evacuaon, and fought against it as it was carried out.8 1 A look at the Shirat HaYam 2 A trailer being refurbished 3 Old vs. New: an Egypan structure and next to it, a trailer being transported on a truck
